Closet Design

Home storage options have improved and expanded in recent years. No matter what the need, there are closet design options available to meet each individual storage need for any space. Whether building a new closet, repurposing a room or space for storage, or simply redesigning an existing closet, design options are limitless.

Several things are important to consider when thinking about the best design for a closet. First, what is the purpose of the closet and who is it designed to serve? Plans for his and hers closets will be very different from a closet devised for a single person or a child. Will the closet plans include a full length mirror or a seating area? What are the dimensions of the space being considered? What types of materials or clothing need to be stored in the closet? The answer to each of these questions will help in drawing the perfect blueprint to create a closet that can serve every organizational need.

There are many professional companies available to design a functional closet space. Some online businesses offer design programs that draw plans according to the dimensions and specifications entered by the client. Many of these companies also sell prefabricated shelving, drawers and hanging poles that can be purchased and assembled based upon the plan. Further, some companies offer installation options, as well. This type of closet design option is very helpful when redesigning an existing closet or other space within the home.

It is possible to draft a plan for a closet without elaborate designs. As long as great care is taken to measure the closet dimensions carefully, adding special elements to personalize the closet space will be very easy given the wide array of materials available. When adding or completely building a closet from scratch, it can be very helpful to think specifically about the design of the closet walls. Extra installation of 2 x 4 blocks between the joists in the walls will make hanging shelves and clothing bars simple business. Having plenty of support in the walls is important for the closet cabinets and shelves to hold the weight of the items in storage. Further, varying the placement of block supports is important to plan for clothing bars at different heights. Lower rods are designed to hold pants, while a higher bar above is intended for shirts.

Depending upon budget, closet hardware, shelving, cabinets and drawers are available in basic wire laminate or solid wood designs. Wire shelving and drawer systems are less expensive, but are very flexible and functional for smaller, basic closets. The wire shelves can be easily cut with wire cutters into any size needed, and pre-made brackets allow for trouble-free installation. Laminate shelves, cabinets and bar hanging brackets are also pre-fabricated and come in sizes most commonly used in closet design, but can be cut and customized to fit specific areas. Drawers, shoe racks and cabinets are relatively easy to install, including simple instructions in each kit. However, for a modest fee installation is usually available from the company selling the materials. Luxury closets can also be designed with shelves, shoe racks, cabinets that have a furniture-like look and feel. These closets usually are professionally installed.

Closets can be built with amazing technological ingenuity. Clothing rods and tie racks can be created to rotate, along with shoe shelves that flip to store several levels of shoes. Benches with hidden storage can be crafted, and special lighting can be installed in a dressing room area. Further, a spa-like dressing area can be designed by integrating a bathing area with a closet. The only limitation in organizational options lies within the imagination of the designer.

Organization is simple with proper closet design. Whether a pre-fabricated system or custom designed plan best suits a customer's needs, there are many materials and choices available to suit every style preference. Closets can be made to be beautiful, functional and practical for today's homes.
